Bins. Dorset Council collects food waste every week. Rubbish (the 140 litre black bin, or two of the council's blue sacks) is fortnightly, and so is the recycling bin, with the glass box collected on the same day. Garden waste is a paid extra: a brown lidded bin every fortnight, £74 for a full year from April, which is 25 collections, and less if you start later in the year, down to £45 for a December start. Bins need to be out by 6am. We have not been able to confirm which day Abbotsbury's collection is, because the council's lookup was out of order when we checked; put your postcode into the My Local Information page and it will tell you. If your bin is missed, report it after 4pm on the day and leave it out; the council aims to come back within 5 working days.

The tip. The nearest household recycling centre is Lodmoor, on Preston Beach Road in Weymouth, DT4 7SX. Open every day 9am to 5pm, though the times change on 1 October and 1 April, and it opens on bank holidays apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. No booking for ordinary household stuff. You do need to book for the free DIY waste allowance, which is 16 bags over four visits in four weeks, and for asbestos. Rubble and soil are £1.50 a bag, plasterboard £2.50 a bag or £10 a sheet, tyres £5 each, and gas canisters £6 to £35. Trailers no bigger than 1.2m by 1.8m, and some vehicles need a permit. Bridport (Broomhills) is the other option. Bulky items like sofas and mattresses: the council does not collect them itself and sends you to Dorset Reclaim.

Doctor. There is no surgery in Abbotsbury. The nearest is Portesham Surgery, Malthouse Meadow, Portesham DT3 4NS, 01305 871468, a branch of the Prince of Wales Surgery in Dorchester (01305 250989). It is open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm, and it dispenses, 8.30 to 12 and 4 to 6. It was taking new patients when we checked in September 2026. Out of hours, ring 111.

Pharmacy. The nearest we can find is Day Lewis at 16 East Street, Chickerell DT3 4DT, 01305 779054, Monday to Friday 8.30 to 1 and 2 to 5.30, closed at weekends. If you are registered at Portesham the surgery dispenses. The NHS pharmacy finder has the rest.

Dentist. We do not have a local NHS dentist to point you to; the NHS find a dentist page is the place to look.

School. The nearest primary school is Portesham Church of England Primary School, Winters Close, Portesham DT3 4HP, 01305 871283, [email protected], for ages 4 to 11. The head is Mrs Vicky Prior and the school is part of The First Federation Trust. Dorset Council runs school bus route MF006 to it. For secondary school we have not been able to pin down the catchment, so ring Dorset Council admissions on 01305 221060 before you count on any particular school. Library. There is no mobile library and no stop in Abbotsbury. If you are housebound, the Home Library Service brings books out through the Royal Voluntary Service, 01305 236666.
