Getting your bearings

The village runs east to west along the B3157, the coast road between Bridport and Weymouth: West Street, Market Street and Rodden Row are the same road with three names. Church Street drops south from the middle of it to St Nicholas' Church, the abbey remains and the tithe barn, and carries on as New Barn Road to the Swannery, a mile away on the Fleet. Chapel Lane leaves West Street for the path up to St Catherine's Chapel on its hill. The Subtropical Gardens and the beach car park are a mile and a half west, down the lane off the top of Abbotsbury Hill, and the Iron Age fort of Abbotsbury Castle sits on the ridge above them. Everything in the village itself is within ten minutes' walk of the Ilchester Arms.
